I just bought a HDS 5 Lowrance Insight to replace my X97-(which worked outstanding by the way). I wanted to get a GPS/Sonar system to replace my etrex for waypoints and tracking of trolling. My old unit's transducer had a temp sensor on the back and had a wheel for speed that fed in with the sonar acble together. The HDS mentions both of these items in their setup, but I can't tell if it has a temp unit in the transducer. I had also assumed that since the HDS is a GPS-tha it would show speed. Can anyone tell me if the HDS does either without external xtras? I'm not so much for temp as I am for trolling speed. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Lowrance HDS 5

i would say that if it has gps it should have a speed reading, and since im sure it cost an arm and a leg it should also have a temp sensor in the transducer.

you will probably have to carry the book with you in the boat for a little while til you get the hang of all the little things you want it to do.

i know everything about my fishfinders........ i have 4

and i have 2 handheld gps units and have barely scratched the surface of all the technology inside.......... i just learned what i really wanted it for and decided i would read up on the rest later..... bby the way put your manual in a plastic bag of some sort and if you get it out to use as a reference put it back immediately.. dont ask me why just do it you will not regret it ;)

Re: Lowrance HDS 5

I got it installed and it does have temp and sog display. I spent 3 hours going through menus to set it up like I wanted. I downloaded the manual before I bought it and also the software update. Whats amazing I worked on this in my garage with the door down and when I turned it on, it had my position from outta nowhere in about 45 seconds. I wasn't expecting that as I have a 2 story home and the second floor completely covers the garage.
I worked through all the menus, but your right. I will have to carry that just like I did with the other Lowrance. Sometimes you forget how you got to when you want to go or want to overlay gauges or split chart and sonar pages. The unit is pretty cool-can't wait to put the boat on the water tomorrow

Got an HDS-7 and yeah. Gonna be a long time before I have it all figured out.

Still hasn't found me any fish though. :(
