Hello to all,

I'm looking to upgrade to a new sonar with sidescan. I've been looking at the Lowrance HDS models and also the Hummingbirds. For any of you who have one or checked them out obviously you know that they aren't cheap. In my experience if something is really nice to have and isn't cheap there is usually someone low enough to try and steal it. Head units aren't that hard to get off either. No doubt I would register my product with the manufacturer. What I want to know is can a head unit with gps capabilities be found again if someone takes it,buys the accessories, and turns it on? For instance I know that a lot of cell phones can be found by calling the service provider because of the fact that they have gps. Also for anyone that has experience with the sidescan models, is there any brand or model you have found to be better over the competition? Thanks for any info you have.:)

A GNSS receiver cannot be located because it is only a receiver. A cellular telephone can be located because it contains a transmitter and as soon as it is turned on, the transmitter registers the device with the cellular network.

Yup that makes sense.. It sucks to think that there's no way of protecting it other that always removing it. I guess that's what there is insurance for.
