I have been a happy Eagle customer until my June 2010 purchase of a new 640C Color GPS/Sonar. The backlight failed and Lowrance won't do anything but offer me a new Elite5 for $359 + shipping as it is out of warranty ($600 list- same as my Eagle was. But that is a different gripe.
As an alternative, I am considering a grayscale GPS. They don't offer a 5" screen in grayscale
anymore. I don't want to downgrade but I think I can convince them to ship it without cost or shipping charges.
Why grayscale? Because it is entirely readable without a backlight, day or night! AND I don't have money for a new unit. One disadvantage is that the 640C uses an SD card- the new units all have micro SD card slots.
I would like input regarding the Mark4 from anyone who has been using one. I have discovered I am really dependent on the speed reading, "track up" running, and the saving of my trails. I also liked the customizable screen data and adjustable backlight brightness.
Thank you for your time.
