This is continuing from previous post. Please read my previous posts before giving me an answer, since I did do what was replied to me in previous, and the results are the same.
I cant get the shift shaft and the upper controls to match up in forward gear, it will match up in neutral but when I shift to forward it goes into reverse in lower unit. I tried in different positions and its always the same, so what is the problem?
Also the reverse lockout piece, what position should it be in when I put lower unit bk together.
thanks
Ken

Ok.. read previous post.. There are three possible combinations, only one will work..It will probably take a few attempt to find the right pattern... Here you go.. remove lower unit..(ALL VIEWS LOOKING DOWN AT WATER PUMP) Turn shift shaft to the right until you find forward..Forward will be (propeller turning clockwise while the drive shaft turns counterclockwise)as your engine turns counterclockwise.. When you get forward turn the shift shaft one click to the left.. This should be neutral... One more click left should be reverse(propeller and drive shaft should now both turn counterclockwise)...This is the only pattern that will work..Once this pattern is correct shift into forward by turning the shift shaft to the RIGHT from the correct neutral position... Place throtte/shift lever on the control box into forward and install lower unit.. To check after install shift into forward and make sure the propeller cannot be turned counterclockwise... ;)

Thanks for info but no cigar, the shift shaft will not mesh up with the upper shaft in forward position only in reverse and if it did mesh like I tried before it jumps straight to reverse no matter what. Forward is hard to find it seens or it goes from forward skips nuetral and goes into reverse. Is there something in the L/U that can be wrong, it worked fine before I messed with it.

Ok.. Try disconecting the shift cable on the engine. Sometimes the cable will be out of adjustment and cause dificulty getting the shift shaft to line up.. Push the shift linkage into the forward position and try to install.. If you need to slightly move the linkage by hand to engauge the two shafts... If this does not work then try to install in neutral position...
