The shift shaft on the lower unit of my 1975 850 merc turns freely without engaging any gear. It's currently in fwd. How do I remove the bushing that secures the shift shaft? Do I need a special tool or can I tap it in the notched areas with hammer and screw driver?

Yes there is a tool for that but if you use some common sense and know when to quit you may be able to get it out like that if its not salt corroded.

roger, if the shift shaft turns all the way around without shifting into fwd, neuteral and rev. then either the shaft is broken or has been pulled out of the shift cam, in either case you will have to remove the carrier to repair it.

Thanks guys. I have a spare to use. I'll wait until I find a manual at a decent price before I attempt to take the LU apart.
