Hi all. Im not sure if this should be bumped to the general boating section, but I have a '71 merc650 which is Very difficult to turn at the steering wheel. I think its the motor seizing in its pivoting mechanism rather than the steering assembly though.

Even when I have disconnected the steering ram/tube the motor is really hard to turn/push from side to side (almost impossible). Its like the pivot (that allows the motor to turn) is siezed on the motor. I have taken the one grease nipple that I could find (on the port side of the vertical pivot tube) out and tried to flush the old grease out with degreaser. I then re-greased until new grease was pushed out of the bottom of the pivot tube. It seemed a bit better for a while but has gone tight again.

Any suggestions of what I should do next?

Many thanks in advance

Cheers - Troy

old greese can really become a problem. a little
heat may be helpful if you are very careful.
otherwise... use a good degreaser, clean, lube,
turn like crazy, repeat.
good luck,
M.Y.
