Hi Folks - Brand new here and hoping to get some advice from Lund owners. I am seriously considering a new Lund 1660 Classic rigged with a 25hp Mercury 4-stroke EFI, power trim and tilt.

Due to horsepower restrictions on one of the large reservoirs here in W. Massachusetts, the 25hp is the biggest powerplant allowed. I am wondering if anyone here has experience with this hull/power combination? Does the boat get on plane adequately? Is it borderline, or really up there? Can it handle two guys and gear and still plane? What's the estimated mph?

I'm hoping someone can give me good info. Thanks!

Hey Guy, welcome to iboats.
As RP has said untill more Lund owners show up, your best bet would be in the Boat topics non engine forum.
I will leave this here and will also show it there.

Again, welcome to iboats.

A 25hp Merc should push a 16ft lund pretty well. Infact I know guys that pull water skiers with that setup.

I have a lund 16 footer with a 25 HP johnson. I have never tried to pull a skier with it, but I think I could pull a light one with it. I dought it would pull a full sized adult though. Mine planes great with 2 people and gear on board, but when I add a 3rd then it is a little harder to plain.

Guy Smiley,
Im also new to this forum . I'm also new to the Lund family. I have Lund 1660 Classic SS Crappie Edition with 50hp four stroke.
May I suggest you have the sales folks let you try it out. I have a feeling that unless I haven't figured out the trim yet, you may not be happy with the plaining characteristics.
Hope this doesn't rain on your parade, but I'd really get them to let you try it on the water.

Re: Lund 1660 Speed/Planing w/25hp?

Here is another data point. I just purchased a 2004 Alaskan 1600, which has a 2005 25HP Mercury Bigfoot 4stroke.

I have been out in it several times, and find it slow to plane, and I top out at 19.5 kts on my GPS. This is with 2 people in the boat, both around 200lbs, a good amount of gear, and ~10gallons of fuel. There is no way to pull a skier with this set up.

My hull is similar to the 1660 classic in weight, so hopefully these numbers help. I love the boat so far, it is really stable and handles the water well. I also stuck with the 25 to allow me to run the Quabbin.

you could always get a higher HP engine that has the same power head/chassis size and put a set of 25hp decals on it.

I own a 1660 Classis SS (side console) with a 60 hp Merc 4st and would not recommend anything less than the max hp (60). If you have to run a 25 hp get a smaller Lund. The 1660 has a wide beam and is slow out of the hole.
With a 14" pitch prop at WOT 6000 rpm and 36 mph (light load)

Don't know if you made a decision yet as this is an old post. I'll post this anyway so maybe I can prevent another member from making the same mistake. My first motor 2 months ago was a 2005 (new in box) Mercury 30 4 stroke EFI that the dealer mounted on my 2007 1425 Lund Classic SS turned out to be an incredible dog.

Took at least 100-200 yards to plane with only my Wife and I aboard. A 10 mph headwind and fagadaboutit planing at all unless I moved out from behind the wheel and practically had to hang off the bow to get it to plane. And then another boat cuts across your path and you slow down for his wake and you get to do it all over again. 3rd person on board, no way!

Dealer said he later discovered a throttle problem when he sold it to someone else, but I never bought that explanation.

The other poster was right on the money . . . try it out on the water first. You will NEVER be happy with a 25 hp on a 16 foot boat. I can guarantee that!

I finally had them swap the 30 for a 40 Merc and I'm happy as a clam now :D Boat pops up on plane in about 10 feet. Top end about 32 mph with 2 or 3 on board. Never had 4 people yet to test the top end and planing out.

If in doubt, ALWAYS go with the Max hp the boat is rated for. I always knew that, but tried to save a few dollars anyway and was very unhappy with the first motor's performance.
