IMG_0074.jpgIMG_0076.jpgIMG_0077.jpgIMG_0078.jpgIMG_0082.jpgHey Folks!

First time poster, best boat site I've been able to find on the internet, thanks for your time! I have a Gary Roach Edition Lund Pro V that belonged to my father.

Great boat, tons of memories. My father was an outdoor writer and fisherman named Whopper John who even had a boat ramp in our home town of Grand Forks ND named after him, so the boat was a big part of our lives.

I would love to restore this boat but I am up aganist two major hurdles.
1. Ignorance
2. Pretty intense Hull damage

This site has inspired me into thinking retoration might be possible. I think I could handle floor repair and electriecs but the hull may be too badly damaged to warrent repair. It was caught in several storms and beat against the docks, swamped on beaches, dropped on boat ramps and bounced over rocks. Most of my old man's stories were about catastrophies and near death boating experiences :p

There are several Gashes and major dents above the water line. Serious scratching, and several slow leaks below the water line. I have read several of the threads on hull repair but most of them deal with minor repairs. If I put the time into this I wouldnt want it to be for naught, and I wouldnt want the boat to be a hidious monster with large ugly patches all over it :)

The boat was dropped on the ramp and the old plug was smashed. a new plug installed and there is some mysterious calking in that area.

My question for the community is would you attempt to repair the pictured hull with no experience? Would the boat still look respectible when complete?

or

Would you sell the boat, and get a more serviceable craft in a couple years when finances allow? If so how much would you expect to get for this tired old war horse?

I am excited to get your two cents!

I am no expert, but is the sentimental value worth it? I did vote to restore but I've never tried to do it.

I'd like to see more and better pics,....

If you decide not to attempt it I might be interested in it for a winter project, Provided the price was right.

It is hard to see the major damage..
But it sounds like this boat means a lot to you and that you have more time then money..
So I would say restore her....Not for any resell monetary gains, but knowing you are keeping a part of your Father's legacy alive for future generations.

I'll give you a nickel 98 for that old hunk of junk right now!;)

Seriously though, scratches, dents, welds, and patches are just battle scars on an old aluminum boat and should be worn proudly!

You can restore any boat with the help of this forum and aluminum boats are the easiest.

I personally would restore this boat, it would be a labor of love and a dedication to the memories with your Dad.

back damage.jpgside of boat.jpg

I tried to zoom in and crop so you can see the dents a little better...they run along the whole side of the boat. Does one just pound these out?

The bottom center rear was dropped on the ramp so theres some calking there and an old patched up drain hole.

The boat is about 5 hours away atm so better pics will be a couple of weeks away. Time is far more availible than money and the sentimential value of the boat is damn high, but the old man would also just be proud of me for being on the water regardless of the vessle.

I found this vid inspriring as far as dealing with a few leaks.

Bah! I've had bigger hurties on my nu-nu than those little ol' dings and scratches!

As far as that vid goes, a lot of people wouldn't believe the floatation some of the aluminum boats have these days. If properly cared for, you won't even know you have a hole in your boat until you pull it out of the water on the trailer and all the water comes pouring out.

Find/repair loose rivets. Patch/weld old damage. Redeck/carpet entire boat. New seats, etc as needed. Paint/re-decal entire boat. Might cost a couple (3ish) grand. Reliving some of those memories...... priceless. Getting it inside to assess should be a priority. Good luck, i wish i had your opportunity.

Not $3K, more like $1000-$1500 and it'll be real nice when he's done too. Aluminum boats are a lot cheaper to restore than fiberglass.

I dont see how he could hit that low a number...new wood and carpet, glue, fasteners, strip and paint the hull...rivets, tools, equipment he doesnt have now....

thats a stretch

+1, indeed. thiker15 provided pics & info to help me with my '91 ProV 1800. New deck, carpet, plumbing, pumps, switches, batteries, trolling motor, hardware (for deck), ran me around $1500.

And if you don't restore it, I'll buy the trailer :)

I say gut it and clean, then check damage, won't be showroom new when done but should plenty seviceable and sharp in its own right. Go for it!!!

A Lund Tin boat is a fishing boat.

Restore it and go boating. Tin boats are not beauty queens - they are endurance kings!!

Damage doesn't look too bad. I'd put it this way. Assess what you have, estimate the cost of repairs and then go price a new one! I think you can do a really sweet job on it for a lot less than the price of a new one. But then I am partial to any Lund.

Re: Lund Pro V Restore or Sell?

The other big question is what shape is the motor in??

Does it run??

That could add significant expense,...........
