got my 62 johnson seahorse 10 running finally and took it to the lake. I put it in forward and nothing, then reverse and i did have that. I remember about 3 years ago last time I used it it would jump out of forward as rpm's increased. I dropped the lower unit out and i don't see any visible problems. I worked the clutch dog by the shifter while the housing was off and it seemed ok. Any ideas?

Re: lwr unit problem

Is the handle actually moving the shift rod? Remove the window on the exhaust housing and see if the coupler is actually going up and down with the lever. There would have to be something pretty screwed up in the lower unit to cause it not to shift at all.
Remember, the engine or propeller must turn as you shift gears so the clutch dog can engaged the gear.

yeah the rod is moving and the clutch dog appears to be changing directions when i shift. Is it possible the shift lever had come out of the pockets on the clutch dog? thanks for your help Paul.

Sure it's possible - but unless you removed the philips screw in the skeg (the pivot for the shifter fork) of the lower unit it is awfully unlikely. I got the impression that when you moved the shift lever manually with the lower unit off it selected gears correctly.
But if the lower unit shift rod is moving and the lower unit is not shifting, and the water pump is pumping (driveshaft is not stripped in the crankshaft), then there must be a problem inside the lower unit itself.
