I suspect that my 1982, 50hp 4cyl is going lean at full throttle (it is getting hot, and the power starts surging like there's no fuel). Runs fine at 4k rpm.

I rebuilt the carbs, and an expert looked at float settings and set the idle mixture for me. These carbs have diaphragm pumps built into them, when I did the rebuild, new diaphragms (black rubber ones from the Merc dealer), and "valves" (just little flaps that are part of the gasket) were put in. The ones that came out where a tan plastic that looked like it had some reinforcement fibers in it. I'm beginning to think that I should have kept them; I took the cover off of the top carb (easy to get to) and found that the little valvles on the new rubber parts are curling up a bit... Does anyone know the source of the reinforced "plastic" parts?

I'm also wondering if I should try routing the fuel line higher so that it goes directly to the top carb (if there's even room to do this), and put the "tee" to feed the bottom carb just before the fuel line enters the top carb. At present, the fuel line goes thru an in-line filter, then to a tee between the two carbs.
