I'm originally from Milpitas.

Best defensive spray you can get is bear repellant; 10% oc pepper spray, guaranteed to stop a charging grizzly in it's tracks, tho if it didn’t I doubt you'd be around to claim a refund. Usually as a florescent dye in the mix. Not legal to posses in all areas.

Dog repellant: .1% to .5% oc pepper.
People repellant: 1% oc pepper.
Police version of people repellant: 5% oc pepper.
Bear repellant: 10% oc pepper.

Those % numbers are from memory, so subject to error.

I read the other day that using amonia in a squirt gun works fine.

Heres where I get mine. I carry 18% OC. Get the stream not the fog or the foam. This avoids self contamination.

www.galls.com

I have the 10%. The dept use to issue a 15% but liability lawyer said to drop the concertration. Supposedly ( they said and I didn't see the study) the % doesn't effect knockdown power at all, it only efffects stay down power. A 55 will knockdown and incapacitae for say 1 minute where as a 15% will stay down for 10 minutes. I don't know sense I haven't tried to find out myself. I do know its very effective on MOST people. There are some that it will not effect at all.

I'd like to know where you tested this theory, I can attest to the fact that it doesn't always work. ;)

When in bear country, it is always a good idea to carry pepper spray.

It's also a good idea to wear little bells on your feet to notify bears of your presence.

You also need to know how to identify the different types of bear scat to know if you are in black bear country or grizzly bear country. Black bear scat is small, clumpy, and contains hair. Grizzly bear scat is large, smells like pepper spray, and contains small bells :) :) :)

If you use ammonia you've got to get 'em right in the eyes. Otherwise you'll just annoy them, not incapacitate them.

Diluted ammonia in a water pistol shot right into the eyes supposedly works to help break dogs of ther car/bike chasing habits.

Somehow I'd prefer carrying a revolver chambered in .44 Magnum.

Re: Mace or Pepper Spray

My mistake, I now carry 10% OC spray. The 18% from back in the day is not available anymore.

If your going to carry it, test your reaction first. Go to your garage and spray it into a trash can. If you don't know how the mist and fumes will affect you you may knock yourself out too. The panic factor is part of it. In training I have been sprayed with it. I call it a significant emotional experience.

The revolver is a good idea but most of the time useless. Until a person takes up a weapon and takes another human life they don't know how they will react. Hesitation when threatening with a gun is deadly.
