Machine shop went .040 over???

The motor is a 1972 Johnson 125 hp. I fried a piston, and was in the process of rebuilding it. I bought Wiseco .030 pistons. Go to put it back together and the machine shop went .040 over. Everywhere I have looked they don't make .040 piston. I was wondering what options I have. Can I sleeve it for .030? Or do I need to find a different block? Or is that even an option for this year of motor? Thanks

Wiseco doesn't make .040 O/S pistons anymore... or is that just due to the age of the engine you have?

If you supplied a .030 piston along with the crankcase when you delivered it to be bored oversize, the machine shop owes you a crankcase and another proper bore job.

Re: Machine shop went .040 over???

Yea the biggest I could find anywhere was .030 over. The machine shop ordered the pistons and bored the block for me. Then when we started putting it back together we noticed it. They bored it before they found pistons. They said they will give money back, but that won't really help me right now. They were trying to find pistons for it and said they couldn't find any either. So maybe somebody knows where I could find another block. In my area we don't have very many of these motors.

Look in the "Top Secret File" at the top of the page, there is a list of salvage yards there, maybe one of them can help you out.
I would make sure the machine shop paid for the block and a new bore job.

Yep, what Haffiman said. They owe you!

Giving you your money back is simply leaving you out on a hook so to speak with a worthless crankcase.

That is exactly what I told them. I or they will be calling advanced sleeve tomorrow. That is why I love this site, so many smart people that know their way around the block. And all within an hour. Thanks

Durban.... The .044 piston you speak of... Is it the same design as the 1972 125hp piston, height, dome, location and diameter of wrist pin hole, etc?

We have had a lot of 'Frankenrudes' on this board, now it looks like we may be getting a 'Durbanrude' as well!!
From what I can see from their pdf catalog, they do not have pistons at all for the 72-125??

If not mistaken the pistons for 71-72 were quite special, but not sure in which way??

I have the Wiseco books on hand and came to the same conclusion. Three ring piston, small diameter wrist pin... seems to be all by itself.

Yes excactly right. The 73 model year wont work. Same bore but piston is different. We bought them from a place in Utah that had only 4 left. We just ordered sleeves, to fix the mistake, so hopefully all is well from here.
