machining/rubbing noise coming back into neutral

I just bought an 05 mariah sx19, and fired it up for the first time on my driveway, muffs on, and it'll shift fine into forward, but when I shift into neutral its as if it doesen't completely come out of gear, and I get a rubbing/machining noisem like you're turning something on a lathe. I'll ease it a bit towards reverse, just before it'll engage, and the noise is gone, and vice versa from reverse to neutral. I have a 3L with the alpha one, is it as simple as a cable adjustment or do I need something bigger.. any help is appreciated!

I'll ease it a bit

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,...

That's probably the Problem...

Alpha drives, like most outboards need to be shifted "Briskly".....

Donno what your Noise is, doesn't sound typical.... But try it shiftin' Briskly,... ;)

I've tried being gentle and also being brisk, and its the same result. it just sounds like there's two metal parts rubbing the snot out of each other, and no matter how much I try to play with neutral it always goes back to rubbing. When I start it up though, I have no issues. Only after I engage forward or reverse and go back into neutral does it make the noise. maybe something with the shift interrupt system?

Go to the adults only sticky and get a manual for your drive. Not knowing the history, it could be a cable adjustment or possibly bad lower shift cable. Both covered in the manual. You should pull the drive and inspect the bellows and gimble bearing as well as change the impeller.
