Re: magneto ignition

what is the make model and year of the engine? Magneto ignitions are very elementry, if the magnetic field holds a nut, bolt or tool to it, then the magneto is probably fine.I would check the points and consdenser first........hope that helps

Howdy fresnoBaker.

The first check is obvious, I think. Does it make spark at the plug?

Second, use an ohm meter to ensure that the points are not grounded by the ignition kill circuit when you want the engine to run. (One side is supposed to be grounded, the other side only when the points are closed)

Third, disconnect the condenser and make sure it isn't grounded.

You should measure a low resistance from the points to ground through the primary side of the coil and a slightly higher resistance from the high voltage output to ground through the coil secondary winding.

To get anything more specific you must do as the message at the top of the page suggests and tell us what engine you have, make, model, year, and any trouble you are having.

Good luck. :)
