Hello All,
I am new to this forum but I must say I was able to break down my 1968 9.5 evinrude 9822e just by reading past posts. I've had this motor out twice this year. It hasn't been ran in 10+ years but fired up on the third pull. The first time it ran great but had a mild back fire in low throttle. The second time it ran good for a while but then started to act up. I discovered it was only running on one cylinder by pulling the plug wires. Just looking at the wires with the cover off they seemed fine. I pulled the flywheel and armature and thats when I found the problem. The lower cylinder plug wire was badly torn where it enters the armature and the other one was on its way. A bad setup if you ask me, to have these wires moving with the throttle. I ordered new points, coils and condensors as well even though they all look new and test fine. I figured I might as well replace them while I have it broke down, plus now I will have spares. My question is on lubrication and setting the points. What needs lubricated in this magneto type ignition and with what? I have it tore down to the armature support and retaining ring. Should this be lubricated as well and with what? How do you set the points to 020? As far as I can tell they make solid contact on both ends. Am I missing something here? My new plug wire and other parts should be here soon.
Thanks,
Doug
P.S. This motor is pushing a 1961 16' Cherokee deep V. I picked the boat, motor, trailer and many extras up a few years ago for $500. What a steal! I am turning it into a walleye fishing machine.
