Maiden voyage

Just bought boat with 1969 electramatic johnson 40 hp. Polished it all up.. Boys (10 and 13) all excited to take it out... motor ran great in barrel but.....problems on the first voyage..motor wouldn't stay running or get up to proper revs...trailer got stuck behind log on boat ramp and Escape Hybrid didn't have any guts to pull er out...but kids said was their best boat ride ever!!! Hmmm was their first one, I guess kids see the bright side in everything!!! Will try to figure this motor out before i ditch the project and go get a new motor.....

Ran great in a barrel, but not good in the lake? I would check over the ignition system. It sounds like you have a leaky coil.

Yup, possibly running on one cylinder. It will idle fine, but not get up to speed. Did you check spark? That's the first thing I would check.

Thanks for the tips! Put it back in the barrel today and had to run it with the choke partially pulled at first but now seems to miss every now and then. Being a fairly large twin cylinder 40hp it sure don't sound good when it misses a beat here and there. Might have to take it in for a tune-up as i'm kinda leery about taking this thing apart. Some things are better left to the experts!!!
