Now that the boat is put away, I can focus on my summer mooring covers. The Velcro is in bad shaped, the covers need patching and waterproofing, etc. the guys around here are nuts. I paid 175 dollar for a 8” by 18” patch. Is there somewhere I can mail them to to have them completely re done for a decent price? Thanks. It’s a 1999 sea ray sun deck 210.

There is a place that does vinyl seat covers 'a La mail-in' . . . not sure about canvas. Canvas may not be the sort of thing that can be done remotely. The snaps need to be pretty precise, so a new canvas typically would have to be final fitted/finished on-site.

Nothing around here but I would think shipping a big heavy cover ain't exactly cheap either. I know the last time I shipped Canda Post a 3lb item in a large box cost me 60 bucks Canadian with insurance. $175.00 for a few patches seems high. An hour labour and material so $125.00 is close though. It's human nature to not want to pay the going rate unless it's our turn to get paid.

Go to leatherworker forum see if any members are close to you maybe one of them will do canvas work at a more affordable price there’s got to be some in your area and most of those guys will have machines that handle canvas and hobby sewers are often happy to take on projects that offset the cost of there equipment and they do it because they like to create and sew. I’d be happy to do patch work for you but complete covers especially mooring covers that don’t anchor with straps and buckles require a very accurate fit.

I think the materials for my new mooring cover is running about $400. To have the cover made would probably be about $1,500 or more.

So, lots of labor cost in the price of canvas.

Thanks all. I’ll try to get some pictures this week. I’m in Connecticut. I suppose where I’m coming from is CT is extremely expensive and I know that if I shipped them to Idaho for example or Maine, I’d think the savings would greatly make up for the shipping costs. Be back.

Google is your friend . . . See link below.

It mentions mail-in service. . . I cannot speak to the price or quality, and I would not assume that a mail-in service will be less expensive than a local service.

Here is another one that mentions 'mail-in service' for remakes.

http://www.thecanvasstore.com/

Their website states: "We also provide a "Mail-In Canvas Remake Program". Our years of experience allows us to confidently remake your boat canvas better than new from across the globe."

Looks like they are out of Huntington, NY, which may not be too bad for shipping costs to/from CT.

Keep in mind the patch you had made more than likely needed to be matched in color and material. It's rare they have scraps that match identically. The material is bought by the Yard. What do you expect they'l do with the left over material?

There is skilled labor involved as well as commerical grade machinery. We realized that, and since my wife quilts, we bought an entry level heavy duty sewing machine (SailRite) to do alot of this work ourselves.

How much is "too much" for labor? I don't begrudge a person the right to make a living. Honestly, if $175 makes you squeamish, there may be hobbies better suited for you. (No offense intended). I'm staring down the barrel of over $10K in parts and labor, for example.

Shipping cost round trip alone for a heavy cover is not going to be cheap.

Shipping cost round trip alone for a heavy cover is not going to be cheap.

My wife just shipped 4 small parcels for Xmas and she paid almost 100 bucks CDN. If I were you I would first ask what shipping a big heavy tarp would cost. It will be far more than 175 bucks I'm sure. I've said it before when it's time to pay someone for their skills we want to [ay less until it's time to get paid for our skills then we demand what we paid are worth.
