Probably the best 2 things I can think of for maintenence is remove the steering rod from the tube on occasion and clean and lube both up good. The other is don't let it sit idle for too long. Turning the wheel and moving the steering cable and rod will prevent freeze-ups down the road. There have been many posts here about steering rods darn near welding themselves inside the tube from sitting and the owner has to beat them out using heat and such. Not a fun or inexpensive task. And if the steering is getting stiffer and stiffer, best to find out why before it's too late....
