I have a 600 pound capacity cantilever hoist. It goes up easily enough, but takes a lot of muscle to lower it.
I bought it used and haven't done anything to it in 5 years except replace the cable and free up the pulleys.

I have found the manufacturer's manual for a similar, somewhat larger, hoist.

They say "Apply automotive type grease to both the pinion and drum gear teeth, and to the outside diameter of the drum bearing.
Always keep this light film of grease on the gear teeth".

What are pinion and drum gear teeth, and what on earth is the outside diameter of the drum bearing?

First I would use a marine grease, The drum would be what the cable rapes around what there trying to say is keep the cable greased and any thing the cable touches. I would also make sure that every moving part or joint was well lubed

I have an oversupply of white lithium grease. Would that work, at least as a temporary measure?
