Hello, I wanted to thank you in advance if you can help answer some questions I have:

I have a 2005 Stingray with the 4.3 GL-D and the SX-M 1.79 Outdrive.

  1. I replaced the fuel filter yesterday, Do I need to pre-fill it with gas before trying to start or is installing it empty ok?
  2. I replaced the impeller also. The original was 2 seasons old and looked great BTW. The bracket that comes off the block, has some kind of tar that cushions in between the water pipes, how can I replace that? (Was messy)
  3. What fluid do I use for the Trim? Do I replace the Trim fluid ever year?
  4. What fluid do I use for the Power Steering? (Didn't know if there is a special kind)
  5. The outdrive gear oil, I found the Volvo fluid, but wanted to know if anyone can recommend a good synthetic aftermarket fluid? Do I change this every season?
  6. Does this engine have a PCV valve, I couldn't find a replacement number in the volvo parts section?
  7. I just replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor. (126 hours on boat) Anything else need to be done?
  8. I changed the oil last season in April, 2012, and we only had the boat out once last season. The boat stays in our garage. I checked the dipstick yesterday and the oil is as clean as the day I installed it. Should I change the oil anyway?

Thank you so much!

Yup, its ok - the fuel pump will fill it for you
ATF (Dexron II) fluid- no, you don't need to replace it annually unless there is a problem - just inspect the level
  4. What fluid do I use for the Power Steering? (Didn't know if there is a special kind) ATF (Dexron II)
  5. The outdrive gear oil, I found the Volvo fluid, but wanted to know if anyone can recommend a good synthetic aftermarket fluid? Do I change this every season? Yup, every season. I like the Mobilube synthetic, but that's just me....
  6. Does this engine have a PCV valve, I couldn't find a replacement number in the volvo parts section? PN 3856884 - what's wrong with yours? Does it rattle when you shake it?
  7. I just replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor. (126 hours on boat) Anything else need to be done? You mean for just the ignition system? That about covers it...
  8. I changed the oil last season in April, 2012, and we only had the boat out once last season. The boat stays in our garage. I checked the dipstick yesterday and the oil is as clean as the day I installed it. Should I change the oil anyway? You'll get lots of different opinions here- I say change it, cheap insurance. But if it looks like good oil, smells like good oil, and feels like good oil you're probably fine if you want to push it.

Thank you so much!

Have a look here for some good info along with links to download a service manual for your outdrive and engine.
Good luck!

Re: Maintenance Questions

Anyone have answers for these remaining questions:

  1. I replaced the impeller also. The original was 2 seasons old and looked great BTW. The bracket that comes off the block, has some kind of tar that cushions in between the water pipes, how can I replace that? (Was messy)
  2. Does this engine have a PCV valve, I couldn't find a replacement number in the volvo parts section?

There is a rubber end on the support. Item 5 Here

Does this engine have a PCV valve, I couldn't find a replacement number in the volvo parts section?

Hard to say, Pull the fittings out of the valve covers and look. Is one of them a PCV valve?

Re: Maintenance Questions

They had a lot of those things that failed (melted) when you sprayed certain types of corrosion guard on them.

Overheating can cause it to melt too

No it can't! Look at where it's at! It could never get that hot there without the engine exploding into flame.

Re: Maintenance Questions

Mine did, I have never sprayed it with any chemicals, but I overheated it for the first time in 7 years and when I went
to change the impeller, I had a tar grommet instead of rubber.

Re: Maintenance Questions

The thing must have been a real low temp rubber part.
no matter what caused it, you still just have to replace it.

Re: Maintenance Questions

Yes, mine was a complete melted tar grommet. My engine never overheated. And to be honest, I can't imagine that area getting hot enough to melt it (like Don said). Either way, I have the new piece, and will install after I clean the tar up. AGHHHHH!

Re: Maintenance Questions

I should clarify my overheat issue, I ran into a shallow muddy area and it wasn't getting water .
The raw water impeller must have gotten hot enough to heat the brass housing and caused the grommet to melt.
I shut the engine off when I saw my temp rising. I never overheated the engine.
But I'm sure that impeller housing got pretty hot.

Don, does this make more sense to you?

Is it possible it was already "melted" and you only noticed it after the overheat? I cooked the daylights out of my engine last year (that's why I had to buy new) and I was surprised at how many things were NOT melted.

Re: Maintenance Questions

No, it definitely happened after I got stuck in the mud.

Re: Maintenance Questions

I received the new bushing. WOW was it hard cleaning up the melted mess. The only thing that worked to clean was carb cleaner. I still can't believe how it melted like that.
