Hi All-

I am thinking I am finally going to pull my 1983 AQ125a and fix a leaking main seal and oil pan gasket. What else should I think about doing while the engine is out of the boat?

I am planning on doing the following:

Rear Main Seal (463829, 430118)

Oil Pan Gasket - 463587

Drain Plug washer if equiped

Change coolant

Bell housing bearing ( I replaced the bearings and seals that were accessable without removing the bell housing a year ago, but I know there are one or two more that have to be done with the engine out)

Power wash engine bay to get off dried oil and junk

Should I repalce the rubber clamp in the bell housing (804190)?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, I want to get this boat through a few more seasons, but the oil leak is so bad I need to do something about it.

Replace all rubber.
There is a rubber tube which goes down into the engine below the PCV assembly. The PCV assembly has the rubber tube up to the carb.

When I opened up mine, the internal rubber tube was brittle and rotted it came out in pieces.

Somehow I broke my fuel pump drive pin, be careful.

Dennis-

Do you have a part number? I'm looking on volvopentashop and I can't see a pcv assembly on the 125a.

I posted a link to the part number. I bought most of my parts from car part stores. Here is a picture of the hose, it is laying on the hole it goes down. There is also a bracket inside the block to keep it from rubbing on the crankshaft. My block was from a 1989 car.

By the way, I started with a small list of things to do like you are doing. ended up replacing the motor (long story)

I pulled my Merc 4.3 to replace bad front engine mounts. While I had it out I did some diagnostic excavation on the inner transom to verify soundness on my 22 yr old boat.

Since I was staring the engine in the face I changed the rear engine mounts. They were OK, but old, and the opportunity was there. Mounts are cheap vs the time and trouble to change them later.

Summary: You have an old boat. Take the opportunity to replace hard to get at parts while the engine bay is open. Parts are inexpensive vs the time and trouble to pull the engine later.

yes, the two rubber donuts are intended to be a one-time use

I would also toss in a timing belt kit and have the heat exchanger serviced.

with the motor out

address all the issues at the transom plate
replace the steering bushings and seals
replace the down pipe o-ring and inspect the joint area

clean the bilge

Just remembered this part #83 in picture. Mine was almost non existent. It holds up the motor!
Obsolete part, I made one out of a automobile motor mount.

water inlet casting (item 53) only lasts about 5 years in fresh water and about 2 in salt water. I used to replace mine every 2 years until I fabricated a stainless one.
