With all of the political, becoming personal, posts being made here at just the outset of the "off season" (yes I have been a part of them as well) I thought I'd add a little levity to the day and tell you about a major OOPS.

My students (sophomores) are creating a documentary about the Triangle Shirtwaist fire of 1911 in which 146 people, mostly women lost their lives in a horriffic fire due to doors being chained shut. Any way, as we were filming one scene in the schools auditorium, my "prop" people were warming up a fog machine for use.

Suddenly, the fire alarms went off. I was hoping that it was just an unplanned drill but no such luck. Apparently, the fog machine vapor hit the fire sensors about the same time that the sprinkler system experienced a drop in water pressure.

Next thing I know, the entire school is being evacuated, fire trucks are coming from all directions, and I spent nearly an hour explaining what had transpired. My ( and every other) students really enjoyed standing outside for 30 minutes while we recreated the scenario for the fire department except for the three young individuals that were working the machine.

Needless to say, we can't use our smoke machine anymore and tomorrow, I get to talk to my principle after she gets done talking to our district superintendent. My students were quite happy when they asked if they were in trouble, I told them absolutly not and that "stuff" (actually used the word "stuff") stopped flowing downhill at me.

Sheesh what a day!

Re: Major Ooops!!!

that bites! and you have my sympathy. maybe you could offer:

- you & the superintendt really had pre-arranged this for a test of the principal's office staff

- you had originally planned it in the computer lab, so it could've been much worse

- the kids hadn't seen fire engines up close since elementary school, and you thought it was a nice experience for them

- the water really hadn't affected the flooring, due the superb wax & treatment of the janitors, and the real focus should be positive for this point

- you thought that now it would better to just stage the fire scene using the grease bin & dumpsters behind the cafeteria, which provides a more realistic scene with flames, lets the kids enjoy being outside again, and the heat should keep the kids warm & cozy against the cold chill in the air
:D

You could explain to the principal the growth in maturity for the students following a protracted engagement with the services has greatly decreased the anti-authority often shown towards people in the teaching profession and is of little cost when compared to the resultant increased concentration in the classroom.
Ross

Samagee, no dry ice, just a walmart special the kids had picked up after Halloween. Go figure.... No damage, just a whale of a "discussion" with the principle. She also didn't appreciate it too much when I told her we needed to go through the entire exercise again because we forgot to get the Firetrucks on film.

I did get a round of applause from the kids in the hall today but guess who gets to give the training on fire evacuation routes at the next faculty meeting?

Man Oh Man I would hate to be you. I can see what would happen here if someone did something like that. Most likely though my principal would blow out his newly installed gasket (bypass surgery) and then one of the assistants with a better sense of humor would have to handle it.
