I just purchased a merc 25 hp o/b. The serial # is a724122. If anyone could help with the year that would be great.
I am having problems starting it. I sprayed gas in the carb and she fired right up. I will check the frequently asked questions area since I don't have a manual yet.
Thanks in advance.
Bro Chris...

Re: make and year please.

I found a site that helps with finding out the year of my merc, but my number is not there. It is "A724122".
Can anyone help. I am going to buy a manual tomorrow but I need to know what year it is.
Thanks,
Bro Chris...

Re: make and year please.

Brother, the reason you can't find it is that is a Canadian serial number, and most websites assume you have an American outboard.
It seems to me to be an 1985 25hp:
25hp serial numbers (including Canadian)

Sounds to me like your carburetor is in need of rebuilding. Check that gas is getting to the carb first though. Say, remove the fuel line at the carb and see if the primer bulb is getting it up there.

EDIT - I didn't notice that in the GLM catalog, Unicorn. Thanks!
EDIT2 - Um yeah, 1987. That's what I said, right? Where did that A go...? :p

Re: make and year please.

Thanks gentlemen. Much appreciated.
I will purchase a manual tomorrow.
I am going to overhaul this motor starting Wednesday morning.
I just bought it for a couple hundred. Last time the guy had it running was years ago he said. We fired it up today, but only by squirting gas straight into the carb. I am going to take the carb off and clean it, along with changing the impellor and thermostat.
As I start my overhaul, I plan on posting here to let you know my progress, and any questions I might have.
This site is the best, and thanks everyone for all the info you have taught me.
Cheers.
