I have a 71 20hp johnson that I've been putting back together. Runs like a champ. I have the hand starter off cause I'm gonna put a new cable. I noticed my model only has one paw.:'( Could I make one out of Stainless Steel? Or having something like that underneath there is dangerous? I"m planning to have a spare paw in the tool box when I go out, but I figure having one out of stainless could make it one less thing to worry about. I think just having one plastic paw to start is a bad design.

you could do that if you want, but consider the fact that the engine has been doing nicely for 36 years with just one plastic pawl.

Bad design? maybe..... but it has been working on thousands of engines all over the world for decades with out much trouble.

In the end, it's up to you, but you may end up putting alot of work into someting that didn't need doing.

i agree, if the one you have looks worn, just replace it.
