I have a 1992 Merc 5,7 with a 2-barrel carb and Thunderbolt ignition. I well satisfied with the hp output and I'm not really looking for more.
What I however would like to do is make my engine perform as good as it possibly can. What can be tweaked and tuned in order to get perhaps higher efficiency or better reliability?

Follow the merc service manual and perform all regular and tune-up maintenance.

+1. Without changing any parts around you're not going to gain anything, so taking care of it the best you can is your only option. All the instructions will be in the merc service manual.

Perhaps I wasn't being clear about my intentions. The engine is well maintained and up to spec. What I'm looking to do (what I mean by tweaking - perhaps a bad choice of words) are upgrades like perhaps a better ignition module, a less restrictive flame arrestor, 4-barrel etc. I'm not looking for WOT hp, what I want is simply a better running/more efficient engine. If I end up with a couple of hp or increased mpg it's a bonus.

Your current motor is about 210hp @ prop
a 4brl intake and carb, will get you to 250hp,
vortec heads, 4brl intake and carb, about 280hp @ prop.

I am guessing that the prices in Sweden may not be favorable.
