Thanks Ralph. I always wanted to do some of the things they talk about but was afraid I'd break something.

You can always rollback changes using XPs restore capabilities but it's better to buy and install Norton's Goback - it's a great software utility that lets you easily restore your computer to multiple restore points w/o losing any data created in the mean time. You also don;t need to boot to XP to invoke it. So if you can't boot Goback can fix it! It's the best software utility in the world IMHO and I wouldn't be without it. Too often a "bug fix" or "update" would render a computer unbootable or unstable and with a keystroke Goback can undo it. Also great when you load programs you're not sure you want to keep. Just load the program, test it, and if you're unhappy with it, rather than trying to uninstall it, you just restore your computer to the time before it was installed... very powerful tool!

It's nearly impossible to restore your computer manually. XP's rollback only concerns itself with a limited set of files so it can't even truly rollback your computer to a previous state.

What Goback does is essentially insert itself above the OS - it boots before the OS does. It then monitors every change made to your computer and creates a series of checkpoints in a hidden partition. If you need to rollback, it restores your drive to exactly what it looked like at a selected point in time. You can then choose to selectively accept changes made after that point (so you can rescue data files for example that have changed or been created since that point in time)

Now, let me give you a real world example. Microsoft update has an updated driver for my NVIDIA graphics card. Microsoft thinks it's an important update so it will load it automatically. That driver is defective. When I allowed it to be downloaded it corrupted my system and it would not boot to XP. Here comes Goback to the rescue. You get an opportunity during the boot sequence to invoke Goback and rollback your drive. So, I just rolled it back to a time just before the update and presto! My system was restored...

I still support a few people and businesses on the side. I make them all buy and install Goback. Now, when they run into a problem, I ask them when it started and I roll the computer back to a time before it started and it cures about 90% of the problems.
