I have the chance to by a 1976 17 foot mako with a 70hp johnson. What is this boat worth? It needs tlc it runs ok but im not sure if the boat is worth taking a chance on. What should i look for? Is this a bad boat? aside from the obvious is there any specific things I should check?

Thanks Bill

Re: mako

That is a great combo. Mako has a good rep in south Florida. Check the BoatTrader web site for prices. Price is very dependent on where you live, time of year, condition and the motivation of both buyer & seller.

If this is your first boat take someone with you who knows both boat & motors (marine mechanic preferred). For the boat check for cracks, no hooks in the hull and rot in the floor and transom. For the motor the big things are compression and no water in the gearcase. Of course do a water test.

Let us know how you make out.

Re: mako

I agree with SoLittle.. Mako 17's a classic.... With a 70 it may be just a bit underpowered, but it should still do ok..... Get it checked out before you lay out the cash....
