I thought I'd pass this on because it will probably help somebody both time and money.

I just wasted 4 hours killing a computer worm. It probably would have taken twice that to sacrifice a nightcrawler but it would have been a more enjoyable experience.

Didn't think it was a virus because I run both AVG and McAfee but after screwing around with trying to fix the registry I found some software called Malwarebytes. They have a free version that found 19 adwares, viruses and a worm. It fixed my computer in 10 minutes, and it was free. The full version is only $25.

There isn't a computer I can't fix with these tools.

Malwarebytes
Spybot
ccleaner
clamwin

Then if needed
combo fix
LSPfix
Winsock repair
Only use those two above if you know what you are doing and it really needs it.

Buzz, thanks for the added info. I grew up in Appleton and tried getting my wife to move to Point. Didn't work, that's a beautiful area over there.

Which ones are free besides the Malwarebytes?

Bigger question, will the free version actually fix the problem or just identify it and tell you to buy the full version to correct?

Spybot, Malwarebytes and Super-Anti Spyware are all free and fix things. I use them all.

While Malwarebytes is an effective tool, leaving yourself prey to having to use it regularly is not a good idea. Using multiple antivirus programs like AVG and McAfee together actually makes it EASIER to infect your PC.

Actually none of the second group should be used by anyone that is considered an average consumer. Combo Fix has wiped out many a PC that was brought into the shop because the owners had no idea what they were doing with it.

Best advice is not to click on unknown content, and under no circumstances should you click on ANY box that pops up satting that you may have been infected, not even if it gives you an option to close the box.......once you click anywhere inside that box then you have just given access for a worm or trojan to infest your system. Use Ctrl+Alt+Delete and close out all internet windows currently open through task manager.

Isn't Malwarebytes an antivirus program in itself? My worm came as a result of a friend's email, The Adware I'm guessing was a result of my 7 year old.

Nope. :)

Your Antivirus software is not setup right

So it scans your emails before you can read them. :)

Malware Bytes is a good program....

Make sure you download and run a little program called rkill.exe before you use it.

This will kill some hidden processes that are smart enough to avoid the MalwareBytes software.

Google rkill.exe for more info.
