Need help troubleshooting a charging issue. Mando alternator (817119-2) on a mercruiser 7.4l (0k024780) I noticed last time out on the boat gauge was reading around 8v. Next day I was running through things trying to figure it out. Ran the boat on the hose and put meter on the batteries and was only reading 12.45V. Also checked from output right off the alternator and was getting the same reading. Went over all wiring and cleaned ends including grounds on the engine block.
Also need someone to explain to how they work and what exactly the sensing wire (red/purple) and exciter wire (purple) do. Always have 12 v on the sense wire and have 12 v on the exciter wire when the key is on.
Then there is the L2 post that feeds the electrical choke. I was reading a troublehsooting bulletin and it said with the key on I should only be reading around 1.5 to 2.3v. I was reading 12v. How does that work?
I know batteries voltage is a little low. Could this be effecting my charging?
Thanks for any help it will be greatly appreciated!
