When it comes to close quarter maneuvers, are twin outboards as good as twin inboards? I need all the help I can get!

Re: maneuvering

Hi CZ. Welcome to iboats. This is a personal preference thing, but I think twin inboards are more maneuverable. It has to do with the distance of the props to the boats pivot point. On inboards it's closer, so the boat will pivot a little easier. On outboards, with the props sticking way out the back, it takes more power to get the boat pivoting and more effort to keep the boat pivoting in one place. Not hard to do, just more difficult than inboards. A counter rotating prop on the port engine will help with the outboards. I/O's fall somewhere inbetween although their handeling characteristics more closely resemble outboards than inboards. Just my opinion. Good luck.

Re: maneuvering

CZ,

I used to work for a boat hire company and docked houseboats for a living (and cleaned the septic  ). The company had a mixture of twin, outboards, inboards and I/O.

The outboards were always easier followed by the I/O and then the inboards - maybe it was the size of the rudders, dunno. The speed of gear selection is definetly a factor.

Aldo
