I have a 1997 Harris Kayot Ultra Deck with a 1996(i believe) Mercrusier 5.7LX engine and Alpha 1 gen 2 outdrive. The boat is new to me and unfortunately, the inspection I paid to have done didn't pick up the clogged starboard riser & manifold. Anyway, I removed both risers and manifolds and and I plan to install the new ones this weekend. I'm wondering:

1. What is the torque setting for the manifold bolts?
2. What is the torque setting for the riser bolts?
3. What is the torque setting for the spark plugs?
4. Do I use thread sealer on any of the bolts? It looks like the riser bolts had some sort or orange colored thread sealer on them.

The clogged maniflold and riser probably could be cleaned out, because they were just clogged with what looked like barnicles and silt, but they boat is super clean and the engine only has 70 hours so I figured it was best to go with new mercrusier parts. I hope the engine isn't full of this crap. The port manifold and riser looked better, and cooled fine. The engine cools fine on the hose, but I've never had it out.

First of all, if you are going to be working on your own engine and drive, you REALLY need a manual, how do you think I remember all these different torques, timing settings and all? I don't, because I use manuals.
Order a Mercruiser Manual

The spark plugs torque to 15 ft lbs.
Gaskets get NO sealant, the bolts don't need sealant, but a bit of Merc perfect seal prevents rust and frozen bolts when used on the threads of the elbow bolts. Manifold to head bolts use a thin coat of oil. DO NOT use never sieze.
Hi Don

Out of curiousity, is the Merc Perfect Seal just an antisieze of a different formula for marine environments and engine materials?

I know that you buy the correct antisieze for your application (there is the silver stuff, the copper stuff...) and that if you use the wrong antiseize for the materials you are working, you can essentially weld them into place.

PerfectSeal is a gasket sealer. It lubricates the threads and prevents corrosion. Plus you don't have that nasty silver or copper coating all over eveything else on the boat like antisieze.
Antisieze shouldn't be allowed around boats at all IMHO.

Will indian head work in place of the merc perfect seal on the bolt threads?

I agree with Don, I used marine antiseize on my mercruiser drive, and when I tried to separate the two halves it was a bear to get it apart. It had turned into a paste that wouldn't let go.

This may be stating the obvious, but be sure to clean the all bolt threads and clean the threads in the manifolds with a tap (even if it's a new manifold) prior to assembly. If any bolts need to be replaced, do not use anything softer than grade 5.

Dave

If your Merc dealer doesn't have Merc Perfect Seal, see if your Johnson/Evinrude/OMC/Bombardier dealer has their Gasket Sealer

J/E Gasket Sealer

The above link has the 16oz variety. They have it in a 4 ounce can for under $5. I have only seen the Merc product in the 16oz can.
