manual choke vs enrichment

I have a motorcycle equipped with a manual choke. I was reading something the other day that recommends "not running the engine with the choke engaged as engine wear can result".

Let me know if I am wrong here.... running an engine "lean" is reducing the fuel in the mixture, resulting in a hotter engine and possible damage.

The opposite is choking an engine, or in effect, reducing the air in the mixture (making a "rich" mixture), so how would that hurt the engine?

Thanks for the help, this one is puzzling me...

The extra fuel washes the oil off of the cylinder walls.

It's a real damned if you do and damned if you don't. Cold engines need a richer mixture to get started because the fuel burns inefficiently when the combustion chamber temperatures are still cool.

The downside is that alot of that rich mixture goes unburned and just washes down the cylinder wall.

The best solution is fuel injection. It is able to richen the mixture with precision and lean it out rapidly as the temperatures begin to rise.

Use your choke, just don't put a load on the engine until you are able to ease the choke off.

Exactly, that precise fuel metering is main reason an efi motor will last so much longer than a carb'd one.
