I posted this problem a while back and got some possible solutions, but they didn't work. I have a 1990 Johnson 40hp with manual tilt. Tilt won't release when I move the lever. I disconnected the lever from the cable which connects to the tilt cylinder. When I pull the cable by hand (hard to do) the cylinder releases, so I'm assuming that the cylinder isn't frozen. I also disconnected the knurled knob at the top of the cylinder and was able to lift the top with a screwdriver, which also released the cylinder. My manual says the plastic connector at the top of the cable gets 14 turns before you snap it on the back of the lever. My dealer said to give it another half turn if necessary. Tried that, it didn't help. Although I can see the cable moving, it doesn't seem to be lifting enough. Above the knurled knob is a plastic nut. I'm wondering if I need to tighten that end. What I'm thinking is, I disconnect the plastic connector at the lever, loosen the knurled knob, tighten the plastic nut, tighten the knurled knob, then reconnect the plastic connector with 14 turns. Anybody know if this sounds right? Unfortunately, I tow my boat up north each spring and back home each fall, so it's currently 350 miles from here. I'm only up there occasional weekends, with lots of other things that need to get done, so it kind of limits my repair time. If someone could give me the proper procedure, or any other suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
