I recently purchased a Maxum 16' with a Force 85hp. I think it is missing the manual trim? it does not have any power trim or any device, brackets, mounting hardware or cylinders that would lead me to believe there ever was. I read that there are two ways to trim - so my question is about the manual trim. How do I do this? is there a manual trim? it looks like the fellow who owned this at some point didn't trim and there is a gouge in the transome - not too bad a little marine tex and it is good as new - but can anyone please help me learn how to manualy trim this motor - I appreacite your assitance and information

The holes in the mounting brackets accept a through pin. Lacking a pin, bolts on each side will suffice.

Manual trim means using the holes on the transom clamps with a rod or bolt and nut to trim the motor semi-permanently. Here's a pic of a transom with T&T but also shows the manual trim holes on the transom.

Well, the trailering bracket is different as it usually only fits permanently on set of holes. The trim rod on the other hand can fit on any of the set of holes on the transom. The size of the holes can take a max 1/2 inch rod. You can just use full thread stock and two nuts with self locking nylon inserts or a plain rod with threaded ends. It will be great if you can find stainless stock to mitigate rusting. The only disadvantage of this setup is that when reversing, the motor has a tendency to jump out of the water as only its weight is holding it down. For this you can use a short bolt to bolt the "ears" to the transom holes or just use hose clamps to hold it down.

Many of the 85hp's came without power t&t, mine included. Jiggs is right on about the rod/bolt, it's actually called the trim pin. Your motor should have one, but they somehow disappear over the years, and are hard to find, thus they get replaced with a long bolt. Your motor should also have a reverse lock under the front of the lower cowl. The lever there has an unlocked and locked position. The lever actuates a little j shaped bracket that holds onto or releases the trim pin/bolt. You set it in the locked position so the motor does not flip up when in reverse, and in the release position when trailering. If you are missing these parts try ebay or maybe a fellow member here might have an extra.
The trim pin can be moved to any of the 4 holes you see down there. Try them all to find which position your boat performs best at, then leave it.
