Manufactures making other brands of outboards?

OK here is my question.... can any body tell me what company's are making other manufactures outboards?!?!<br />I heard that merc has honda make some of there outboards, honda has merc make there outboards, Evinrude/johnson has suzuki make there outboards, Mercury has Nissan make the smaller outboards (to what horsepower), briggs and stratton has merc make there lower units? <br />how many of these are true? ARe there others?<br />and does anyone know the truth behind this?

Hey, Sloopster.<br /><br />These I know:<br /><br />Johnson 4 strokes of 40 and more HP are made by Suzuki. The smaller ones? I don't know.<br /><br />All Nissans are made by Tohatsu.<br /><br />Many Mercury powerheads are made by Yamaha.<br /><br />For the reast, I only know gossip.

My 2002 Merc 4hp is a Tohatsu/Nissan/Merc.<br />Its probably made in a country we never heard of.<br /><br />Some mercs were/are Ford blocks (2.4 or 2.5 liters)

sloopy great question almost all engine manufactures share components. Mercury is strongly aligned with Yamaha they provide alomost all merc powerheads save the low hp all high hp yamaha lower units are merc same with suzuki and bombarider. The only engine that is 100% made by the manufacturer is the new Evinrude etec with 100% of the engine componants made in house all the rest share parts. It is amazing when you really start to look at this.
