Wondering if you guys are running marine cd players or just regular car cd players..and how either are holding up in your boat?

Re: Marine Audio

Every boat I've ever owned has had a car stereo in it and it held up just fine if reasonably protected from a "soaking". Had one that was not well protected and although it worked ok, the display went bad.

has 2 marine units now but in the past always used automotive without any special mounting bracket. Now, if I go with an automotive unit will get one of those brackets that has a small cover for the radio display.

They still make cd players???? :D

Seriously though - if you are in a fresh water environment and the stereo is protected, use whatever. If you are in salt water, or near it, use a marine unit. The actual price difference(compare features content) is not that big anyway.

Second the car audio vote. Get one with remote if possible and baggie it. You may want to save the big scrilla for your speakers. Make sure they are marine grade. Those are most likely to get splash from in and out at the stern or bow spray. I also used ss screws to hold them in and painted the cutouts with decent paint. If you get an amp make sure that thing is somewhere safe as possible.

Boat came with a fancy pants marine unit the previous owner forked out about $600 for but I never use it.

Mechanical music is all I want out on the water. :D

I didnt see much problem in the automotive units while using it in salt water. Again, those units were mount outside of direct water spray, generally in a compartment, got set up in a fm station and most of the time were not touch.

My thought exactly. Marine or car audio makes no difference to me as long as I get it for the right price, but I can't imagine taking a bunch of CD's out on the water. An iPod or MP3 player is the only way to go. Whatever you get, be sure you have a way to connect an MP3 player. I would even consider a cassette player over a CD player because you can get one of those MP3 cassette adapters. A lot of the newer devices come with an MP3 jack now.

I do agree that marine speakers are important.

I have XM on the boat, but when the wife is aboard we vote. Somehow her vote counts twice, and the ipod comes out :D
