Re: marine batteries/car battery diffrence?

The label is different!!!!! But there are three types of marine batteries, not just one. There is a Marine Starting battery, a Marine/RV Deep Cycle, and a Marine Dual Purpose (starting/deep cycle). As for the difference between auto and marine there are distinct differences. You can actually see the difference. Auto batteries have side terminals or the large conventional posts for attaching the battery cables. Marine batteries have posts and threaded studs for attachment of battery and accessory cables. Ever see an 8 gauge boat harness with a post style battery clamp??? Marine starting batteries are built slightly different than auto batteries since they are subject to a great deal more shock and vibration. Marine or Auto starting batteries are not intended for trolling motor service as deeply discharging them will kill them. Deep Cycle batteries are intended for trolling motor/accessory/RV use. Dual purpose batteries can serve as starting and deep cycle although like everything else, they are a compromise between both services. With this info, who wins the debate??

Starting batteries have thinner plates to maximize the amount of area that the electrolyte sees. Deep cycle have thicker plates. The thinner plates allow more current to be delivered but will degrade easier under higher discharge conditions.

Running a deep cycle battery until they are dead will also ruin them...just may take a little while longer. You should never discharge a deep cycle battery below its 50% capacity point which is around 12.0V.
