marine growth, antifouling paint, painting outdrive

I keep my boat in the water all summer and noticed that if I don't take her out often enough I get to deal with excessive marine growth.

I want to paint my outdrive with antifouling paint to slow down marine growth on the outdrive.
I was told by local marine dealer that I would have to paint with antifouling and then top it over with a coat of outdrive paint.
Is this the proper way of doing it?
Should I also paint aluminum prop with antifouling paint?

Thanks for any advice,
Lenny

You have to pay attention to the type of antifouling. Those based on copper must not be applied to aluminum lower units. So do your homework on this.

A good primer will seal off the aluminum and ensure proper bond between the paint and the drive. Remember not to apply paint to any zinck rings or bars as they must be clean and exposed to the water to work.

Check marine paint manufacturers homepages. VC17 have a special prop & drive spray.

Thanks for your reply UU,
Any idea how long should I let paint to dry before putting the boat in the water?
I plan to give it "TEMPO" outdrive paint and top it over with teflon based anti fouling paint.

Thanks

Time from applying last paint to putting her in the water varies from product to product - as does the time needed for the paint to dry.

VC17m dries instantly - they recommend that you apply to the spots where the stand's supports made it impossible, when the boat hangs from the lift, on the way to the water!

It dries so fast, that if you go back to an area already painted, it will get double thicknes! To avoid this, you should paint it in stripes, leaving a little less than your paintrollers width between them, and when you've striped the whole bottom, start from the beginning - filling the blanks.
