Just bought my first boat, an early 80's Olympic 1800 with an early 90's Johnson 90hp VRO. Noticed the steering piston is a little dry and could use some lube. Is there a general purpose marine grease? If not what should I use?

Welcome to IBOATS.

Been many years since I've had an outboard so here's a link to what appears to me to be an official service manual so this might be of help until someone else might come along that knows for sure:
Boatinfo - 1992-2001 Evinrude Service manual

Re: Marine Lube Grease

We are camping this week and I had some trouble getting the 5th wheel to release when we got here. Seems the release mech. had dried up from all the rain lately, first thing I thought of was " Any grease is ..."

Walmart sells Marine Grease in the Automotive section. Comes in 3 small cartridges. Thinks it's about $4.00.
Cheap Marine Grease is better than no Marine Grease!

Been using that for my trailer wheel bearings since '02 and have had no problems. Quicksilver 2-4-C for the engine. (supposedly contains Teflon?)

Re: Marine Lube Grease

Thanks for all the advice. I bought some generic marine grease and auto parts store. I will keep an eye out for the 2-4-C stuff. Removal of the dry lube and a little of the new grease and all is well.
