No one in my area has 4-stroke marine oil. Everyone has 2-stroke. This is for a 4-horse, 4-stroke Yamaha. If I can't find 4-stroke, marine rated oil, can I use the 2-stroke or - what is a safe alternative? Or should I just mail order?

No. You cant use 2 stroke in a 4 stroke.
2 stroke oil is made to mix in the gas, 4 stroke is made to go in the crank case.
Use the weight oil your manual says and then go buy the same brand as you put in your car.

No, you can not use 2 stroke oil. It is made for a completely different use. I suppose in a pinch, you could use a quality auto multi-viscosity oil but I would take the extra effort to hunt down 4 stroke outboard oil.

Don't they sell it here in iboats stores? It's worth checking out.

Re: Marine oil

Sometimes those 4 cycle OBs can use straight weight auto motor oil. Check the owners manual and see if it can take SAE-30 Oil. You should be able to get that anywhere

Look in your owners manual and read which oils are OK to use in place of the factory oils. Most likely it will be a 10W-30 grade automotive oil.

Check the oil cap or the dipstick -- oil type is sometimes indicated on either or both of these.

I thought it had to be TCW3 marine I use Rotella in all the trucks and tractors, good oil but not the TCW rating. What does that rating mean?

TC-W mean Two Cycle, Water cooled. It is not suitable for 4 stroke engines.

Re: Marine oil

Here is the Yamaha oil recommendation from a 2006 and later F4 Yamaha owners manual:

10W-30 or 10W-40 Yamalube 4-M FC-W oil OR a 4-stroke motor oil with an SAE grade of 10W-30 or 10W-40 with an API rating of SH, SJ, or SL

Quantity 0.53 U.S. Gallons

That means any quality automotive oil that meets those specs. Just go to your local discount store or auto supply place.

Re: Marine oil

WalMart has 4-stroke marine oil. Every "Farm Store" I go to has 4-stroke marine oil and nearly every boat dealer, sporting goods store and convenience store sells the stuff incuding my local grocery store. I'm certainly not trying to beat iBoats out of oil sale but finding 4-stroke marine oil is not an issue unless you live 100 miles from civilization.
