How do you remove marine paint?

I have a boat that was paint before I took ownership and I am assuming it is maring paint and the owner before me paint over the metal information plate and I am trying to remove the paint.

I used a thing called goo off and that didn't work.

What works the besT?

Aircraft paint remover or any of it's derivatives. Be careful to only get it on what you intend to strip. Gloves are a huge help too.

Good luck!

before you try that, try xylens or toluene from the hardware store (xylol or toluol are the same thing). If the po used non catalyzed paint those will still take it off and might not take the paint off the plate underneath.

Re: Marine Paint Question

I tried the xylene/xylol and it didn't work either.

Are there any options other than the aircraft paint thinner...if not where do I get the aircraft paint thinner...that seems pretty expensive.

Thanks

Re: Marine Paint Question

Have you tried steel wool to remove it from the plate? I would caution you that some plates are "inked" and not engraved so it may be covered up forever.

Re: Marine Paint Question

I just sent mirrocraft a note to see if I can get a replacement...hopefully I will hear from them tomorrow and see what they can do.

This capacity plate has been painted over several times and it does not look like it is engraved but inked. So it seems like a replacement is my only option at this point.

These capacity plates are mandatory, aren't they. If I can't get a replacement, am I screwed?

Thanks

Re: Marine Paint Question

MirroCraft got back to me and they said they done have replacements capacity plates for my boat. He did however send me a brochure of my boat that has some of the information I will need. I believe my model number is F-3614.

BIA Engine Size = 35HP
BIA Capacity = 950 #

That is really the only help info the brochure helped with.

However, I am not sure if the capacity of people/weight that is allowed or the total amount of weight that is allowed in the boat. I am going off the the example capacity plate that is attached. Does anyone know where I can figure out that information? I also don't know my serial number...is that needed? Or is that the HULL ID#, because that I do have.
