marine radio

I have a Zodiac console RIB. I am thinking about getting a handheld marine VHF radio. I would hardly use it, but on occasion it might be useful to have (talking to a marina, calling for lock passage). I do have a cell phone and generally don't get out of a service area.

Because I won't use it much, I'm not looking for something with a lot of bells and whistles, just something that gets the job done.

I generally boat on the tidal rivers in the Chesapeake bay area. But I also sometimes go on the Great Lakes and may also boat in southern FL.

Any recommendations?

Thanks.

Re: marine radio

icom makes the best, although I have used a series of Unidens for years. Be sure you can also run it off regualr batteries and carry them. I screwed the charger base onto my dashboard to mount the radio; you have to have the antenna sticking straight up.
