Rebuilding this 79 Mercruiser 260 & was curious if there is a way to tell just by looking if this starter is a marine unit or not?

The label that was on it has gotten wet & fallen off or something.

Every other part that needs to be marine approved is but it's also easy to tell the difference with them but I don't see anything obvious on this starter that tells me it's a marine unit for sure.

The carb & alternator were both replaced when the engine was replaced & they are both marine parts. The starter was replaced at the same time but again I can't tell if it is marine?

Thanks
Jim

Nope,.... The Marineness is All internal,.... basically an extra ssteel plate 'tween the electric motor, 'n the drive,...

In addition to what Bondo said a marine starter field frame is welded together and there will be a glob of sealer where the solenoid is joined to the assembly.

This one does not appear to be welded nor is there any sealer.
I had a feeling it was not a marine unit. It just didn't look right. Maybe it's just that it is not painted all black or something but I felt funny about it.
Now to go find the one that's in my building somewhere.
Thanks guys.

The later style that you have should be fine. The one I described was the older style that was on your engine. The newer style is a lot easier to install because of the weight difference making it a favorit when there is only room for 1 hand installing.

This one actually does have sealer on it. It just wasn't a big glob oozing out everywhere like my 140 starter has.

I found one in my shop that is a Mercruiser starter but it's bad. I took them both apart & they are identical in every way & the case was welded on the inside so apparently this is a marine starter.

Thanks guys.
