I just read through an answer of Joe Reeves(June 6,2002) in which he mentions marine tex epoxy as a material, which after it has bonded overnight, is supposedly stronger than the material it repairs.
Joe does that imply that you can use this material instead of a helicoil,or in combination with one, where even a helicoil will not fit?

The helicoil would be for a spark plug.
(I am thinking of fixing an old cylinder head)

Marine Tex is wonderful stuff, but you can't use it in place of a helicoil. It's for repairing almost anything but metal, although it will work in some small, low strength metal repairs. I would imagine it's a very good insulator, too.

Marine Tex is good stuff in the correct application. NEVER use it to repair a sparkplug thread!! It will not last!!

Helicoils are pretty simple to install & inexpensive - is there a reason to not just put in a helicoil?

rolmops

Take it to a machine shop. They can weld the hole, then install the heli-coil.

Good Luck, Gold Bear

rolmops, I'm not big on using helicoils as a permanent fix, particularly on a sparkplug hole application. If head is fill welded properly with good pentetration and density just have it redrilled and tapped to original sparkplug threads.Bare in mind that if weld procedure intrudes to plug seal surface that it too will need to be machined to proper depth to restore original plug position in cylinder.

That's why I asked...

Did the original helicoil back out? If so, there are oversize ones designed just for that situation, sold by Keensert. "Cormican" on this board told me about them a year or so ago. Work fine. Like any thread insert, be sure to dab a little high-temp sealant on the threads before you put the insert in, otherwise it may driblle oil a bit.

If it's for a smaller Motor, I'd personally try to locate another used head.

Re: marine tex epoxy for spark plug hole repair?

Hello.
Thanks to all of you for the suggestions and advice.
The head I am trying to repair is a winter project.
The original '57 35 horse red head was replaced about a year and a half ago by a '58 blue head which looks just a tiny bit different.
In trying to get back as close to an original look as possible I want to rebuild the red head. Before taking it to the aluminum welder's shop I just wanted some advice about possible alternatives.
My sincere thanks to this board and all you generous people.
May you all have a good holiday and a happy and prosperous new year.
