Marine Tex on outdrive

I just removed my outdrive (penta 275) to service the u-joints and replace bellows, since I have it removed I figured it would be a good time to repaint it. After psi washing it I found the aluminum to be pitted from corrosion. Would it be wise to fill in these pit holes with marine tex and then paint over with paint?

Agree with crab bait, de-greasing is VERY nesessary for the material to stick to the aluminum. in addition you should sand and wire brush the drive to give it some "tooth" for the epoxy to stick to...But it will work.....

If you use a wire brush of any kind make sure it is made of brass, dont use it if it is silver.I had an aluminum welder tell me that .Charlie

Thanks for the input, I kinda figured the worse would be that it would fall off, my other option was to sand, primer with zinc chromate and repaint, and hope the zinc chromate would stop the corrosion pitting problem!

It would be best to find where the corrosion in coming from.Pit holes are usually from stray current in the water or coming from your boat.Do you have zincs on the drive and lift cylinders and transome housing????You can also paint a barrier coat on the drive to isolate the metal. The marinetex idea sounds good and you can use Zinc phosphate primer and then paint.I have had much better luck with zinc phosphate than zinc chromate. Crazy Charlie, I have zincs on the underside of the steering fork, and behind the propeller, don't have trim cylinders (mechanical lift motor).Barrier coat sounds like a good idea, does all the paint have to be removed from stern drive or can I just primer over and apply barrier coat? Also zincs are in decent condition!
