Re: marine transmission?

A marine transmission, often called a marine gear, a reverse gear, or a reduction gear, is a simple clutch and reverse mechanism. Most in small boats are direct drive, 1:1 ratio. Engine turns one revolution, and the output shaft turns one revolution. It has one speed forward, and one speed reverse. Basically they allow you to have neutral, forward and reverse. nothing more. They are typically hydraulically actuated clutch systems.

In an I/O and an O/B they are inside the lower unit, and differ from what I describe. What exactly are you comparing?

There are quite a few differences. Single gear is the biggest difference. Not a conventional clutch like you would have in a car, although all types have some type of "clutch" mechanism. No torque converter in marine either. An inboard tranny is different than an I/O and OB, and there are 3 different types in OBs and I/Os. Cone, dog and electric. All of those give you forward, reverse and neutral.

FWIW, automotive trannys were used in some boats, mostly 60s and 70s, but very rare now.

I think they are really called a reverse gear. When they were first invented they had no reverse, then someone figured out how to build them with reverse, thus called a reverse gear.
Now I could be wrong,I've received incorrect info in the past, maby someone will correct me?
