I am looking into recovering the seats on my boat, and I was wondering if there is any special marine vinyl I should use? Is there a better weight (oz) or anything? I want to use a glossy white and a red. Any suggestions or sources where I can get good vinyl would be much appreciated.

Re: Marine Vinyl

I have seen some with the foam backing, is this a better option or does it not matter? Also, I was told that some vinyl tears easily if it is not backed with something, is this true?

Re: Marine Vinyl

I have gone to a local fabric store. Here on the cape it is Joannes fabrics. They have full rolls of marine vinyl, 10 to 12 dollars a sq yard. The cool thing is the remants. They are dirt cheap same quality about 3 dollars a sq yard. I recoverd the interior of my 20 ft bowrider for about 50 bucks. No kidding. The craft stores are also good for foam and padding. Catch it on sale and it can be a quarter of what you can find it online.

Re: Marine Vinyl

I am in the process of recovering my seats as well. The last boat I did I got the vinyl from a local upholstery supply shop. I pais around 10 dollars a yard. I compared it to the vinyl they have at Joannes and found the stuff at Joannes to be a much better vinyl. And the best part is that Joannes normally puts a 40-50% off coupon in their weekly ads. I got all the material I needed to do the seats and the side panels for around 50 bucks. If you plan on using welt between the seams I would suggest getting embossed welt. It is PVC that comes in most popular colors and is pretty cheap and easy to work with. You can get it at you auto trim dot com. They have color samples to look at. And I was able to sew all of my seats together using nothing more than a Walmart cheapy machine with a heavy duty needle. Beats paying arounf 1500.00 for somebody else to do it and I was able to do one seat at a time and still be able to use the boat.
