marine vs auto distributor

mercruiser 5.7 260 thunderbolt IV
can i eliminate thunderbolt ignition module and coil and replace distibuter with atomotive (what is the diferance) distibutor. having trouble with existing ignition system from what i see marine distributors are around 400.00 and you can buy an aotomotive distributor for 200.00

The marine unit is built and tested to CG standards to NOT be a sorce of gasoline fume ignition

For example the cap cant blow off IF fumes build up inside the unit and there is a flame screen in the base

What is wrong with the TBIV?
It's a pretty bulletproof system, try troubleshooting the system.

An automotive distributor also doesn't have the proper advance curve. Not good for a marine engine.
Besides, you rarely have to replace the complete distributor if there is a problem with the Thunderbolt ignition system.
Your problem (if we knew what it was) may be something other than the distributor anyway.
