Marine vs Bathroom Silicone

Hey all,

I'm mounting a transducer on my transom (aluminum covering wood). The directions say to seal my mounting holes with marine grade silicone. Unfortunately I live an hour away from the rest of civilization and don't have any marine grade silicone on hand. Will bathroom silicone work for this application? Maybe a type II silicone?

I wouldn't use silicone at all. 3M 4200 marine sealant would be my choice. Last time I checked Wal mart had it.

Bathroom silicone is not for under water . It may hold seal for a season or two.

Yep, 3M 4200 is the correct product for this application. Boats and any kind of Silicone is a definite NO-NO!!!!

Hello m8s..

Just a quick note about the tubes you buy ( 4200-5200 etc. ). When your spout kicks off and you come to find later you cant use a caulk gun to use.. Dont throw away the tube..you can cut a hole in it near the tip and squish out more product for more use. Keep cutting further as needed after the hole cures up.

Oh..and IMHO there are many uses for silicone on boats instead of your high end adhesive/sealers. So dont rule it out alltogether.

Would the 3M 4200 be ideal for sealing the 2 halves of my 1960 slickcraft or would 3M 5200 be more for my use? I split the boat into 2 parts to paint it and want some protection when it's ready for the water.
