MarineAir A/C Compressor

I have a 16K BTU MarineAir unit in the boat. The compressor is starting to go (can hear the bearings rattling) and I'd rather not dump $1600.00 for a new one.

Does anyone know of a reputable company that sells replacement compressors for this unit and anyone in the Central Florida that can replace it correctly? Or is that something that can be done by a decent A/C service tech on the boat?

The marine service tech that checked it out quoted me $1200 to replace the compressor! I know it has to be cheaper than that.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have no clue about MarineAir but I would assume the either Thermal King or Carrier makes the components. So check it out and check out your local Carrier dealer and get some part number and I bet they can size and replace a unit for you.

Does the 1200 include the compressor and such?? If so, thats not that bad..

in order to do the compressor you have to recover the freon, cut the old one out, put the new one in, evac the system and then recharge.. the job should not be more that 4 hours or so to do, so when you figure hourly rate and materials...you are there already..

as far as the compressor goes..as suggested you could go to any AC supplier or even Grainger to get it. Just get the compressor numbers and see if they can match it. I would think if purchased it yourself you would be in the 2-4 hundred dollar range... then have to pay someone to drop it in.

the compressor for most commercial companies in cluding carrier are made by Techumsa or some third party..not actually carrier.. so getting one should be fairly easy..

Re: MarineAir A/C Compressor

Thanks for the replies. I think I've found the compressor online in the 350-500 dollar range. I just don't think it should cost over 700 bucks to resolder it in and charge the system. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a complerte system for a good price and just swap it out myself. That I know I can do.
